As an immersive and intensive experience, the Leadership Institute aims to develop you as a leader in your own right and to grow your institutional expertise and leadership skills to navigate the shifting landscape of higher education. The primary goal underlying the HERS curriculum is to help participants achieve more knowledge of and practice within the three core curriculum areas: Institutional Awareness, Networking, and Self-Knowledge.
As a participant, through your experience of and work throughout the HERS Institute, we aim for you to…
Develop and/or expand your network and connections to other women in higher education.
Demonstrate an ethic of care for yourself and others.
Challenge yourself by assessing and articulating your leadership knowledge gaps and needs as a leader, and constructing a plan to develop them.
Practice the ability to listen, to reserve judgment, and to effectively communicate as you gather information from a diversity of perspectives and collaborate with individuals across identities, roles, areas, institutions, etc., adapting messages as necessary.
Learn how to navigate balancing your leadership development with institutional needs and goals.
Assess and strengthen your ability to wrestle with “wicked problems” and challenging questions. (“Wicked” problems are those tricky, persistent problems where there’s no immediate solution.)
Develop skills for leading change and assess how you, in your role, can affect change on your campus and/or beyond.
Examine institutional structures and systems.
Develop or expand your understanding of the national higher education landscape and how tertiary organizations can serve as resources for you, including HERS.
